LEGO mosaic from a photo: how many cells does it need?

In a mosaic of 1 × 1 pieces, each element represents one patch of colour. Before preparing the kit, check that the photo is recognisable on the chosen grid and that the required piece colours exist. PaintGenAI uses an 8 mm planning pitch and estimates quantities; the team must verify assembly.

01

The workflow

Prepare and review the pattern.

  1. 01

    Set the format and technique

Choose LEGO mosaic and save the source and project dimensions. This format uses an 8 mm planning grid.

  2. 02

    Check the silhouette and palette

Compare the source with the grid: backgrounds and small facial features can merge when there are few cells. Crop first if the subject is too small. Then check whether the selected colours exist in the actual piece type: a similar screen shade does not guarantee an available element.

  3. 03

    Review preliminary quantities

The planner counts grid elements and adds a 5% allowance. The team then records QA and exports the current version.

Practical answers

Project preparation questions.

01

How large is a 32 × 32 piece mosaic?

At the 8 mm planning pitch, a 32 × 32 grid measures 256 × 256 mm and contains 1,024 positions for 1 × 1 elements. This is the grid image size; a frame or base may increase the outer dimensions. Counts per colour depend on the pattern, and the allowance is calculated separately.

02

Will any photo work for a small LEGO mosaic?

No. Large silhouettes, contrasting shapes and simple backgrounds read better on a small grid. Small faces and text can disappear. Before ordering pieces, inspect an unsmoothed pattern at the intended viewing distance. Crop the subject larger or increase the grid if recognisability is lost.

03

Can PaintGenAI prepare a LEGO mosaic?

Yes. The LEGO-mosaic technique stores the source and pattern version, while the planner creates an 8 mm grid and preliminary piece estimate.

04

What does a preliminary piece estimate mean?

It uses the chosen grid and adds a 5% allowance. It supports project preparation but does not replace real-piece and kit-content checks by the responsible team.

05

Is PaintGenAI affiliated with LEGO?

No. PaintGenAI is an independent digital workspace. The technique name describes a project format and does not imply affiliation with the trademark owner.
